Innovations in Cash Assistance for Children: Exploring how cash payments to families foster healthy child development
with generous support from the Doris Duke Foundation
In 2022, the Opportunity Lab partnered with the Urban Institute and the California Policy Lab to lead a series of new research projects on the impact of the 2021 expansion of the Child Tax Credit. In addition to producing important new findings on how this expansion of cash assistance benefitted families, the initiative is also bringing together a new consortium of researchers and stakeholders to develop a new set of priorities for research on cash assistance, and how we can use state and federal safety net policy to promote long-term economic security for families with children. Led at UC Berkeley by Hilary Hoynes, this initiative will provide important new guidance for the next generation of research on child and family economic security.

On May 9th, O-Lab invites students and faculty on campus to attend our inaugural Applied Microeconomics Conference on Economic Opportunity. This all-day event will feature research presentations from faculty and lightning talks from graduate students exploring dimensions of poverty, inequality, and opportunity in the United States.
Join O-Lab and the Urban Institute as we explore the impacts of providing cash assistance to low-income families with children and discuss how policymakers and researchers can leverage these insights to improve the well-being of some of our nation’s most vulnerable children.
